Wild west region is a heart of Nepal, any tourist missing this area for trek will make their trip incomplete. The Far Western Nepal is the most stunning region of Nepal with the largest unharmed wilderness area in the lower belt of Nepal called "Terai". The highlights of the tour are Bardia National Park, Rara National park and Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve. These three national park – Rara National park, Bardiya National park, Suklaphata National park that extends from high himalayan regions to low lands of terai regions are called wild west traingles also reflects the image of far west regions providing the glimpse of nepals natural beauty and diverse culture. This area is almost untouched and truly pristine that makes it one of the wildest parts of Nepal making great destinations to be explored.
Rara National Park established in 1976 is a sheltered area in the Himalayas of Nepal. It is the nepal's smallest national park Covering an area of 106 km2 (41 sq mi) in the Mugu andJumla districts.Its main attraction is the Rara Lake at an altitude of 2,990 m (9,810 ft). It is located in the North Western high mountains of Nepal. Rara lake is ovel shaped which is extended upto the maximum length of 5Km and width with 3Km is also the Nepal's biggest lake with the depth of 167m.
During winter, bird lovers can enjoy watching many migratory birds. In summer, Himalayan flowers surrounds the Lake creating a colorful image. Chuchemara peak (4039m) is the highest point in the park provides an excellent panorama to Lake Rara. The snowcapped summits of Ruma Kand(3731m) and Malika Kand(3444m) located on the northern side of the Lake offer a beautiful Mugu-Karnali River valley to the north. Murma Peak also provides an admirable view of park area. The majority of the vegetation in the park is dominated by blue pine with several species of rhododendrons.The Park is the home to around 20 different species of mammals. They include Musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Leopard, Jackal, Himalayan Tahr, Yellow throated marten, Otter, Wild dog, Common langur, Rhesus macaque and Red panda.214 species of birds are recorded in this park. Some of the important species include coots, snow cock, different species of pheasants, grebes, mallard, common teal, red-crested pochard and gulls.
The Bardia National Park was established in 1969 with an area of 368 sq. km In 1988 it was extended to cover the whole Babai Valley upto 968 sq.km and now the area has been double up. It is situated in the mid-far western region on the eastern bank of the Karnali river. It is the largest and most undisturbed wilderness area in the Terai of Nepal. It is rich with having 50 mamples including one horned rinocerous, elephant and different types of deer. Bangle of tigers, different types of birds, different types of fish gives the additional attraction to the Bardiya National Park. It is thickly forested by Sal trees and is carpeted with grass. It is a regenerated habitat for endangered species like the rhinoceros, wild elephant, tiger, swamp deer, black buck, crocodile and Gangetic dolphin, endangered birds includes the Bengal florican, lesser florican, silver-eared mesia and Sarus crane.
Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve was established in 1976 at the far western terai of Nepal beginning with the area of 155sq km and later it was extended 305 sq km. it is situated in the Kanchanpur districts at the southwest of Nepal. It is worldwide popular for the herd of swamp deer, which is currently stands about 2000 individuals. It is the residence of about 45 Wild Elephants and 35 Royal Bengal Tigers, both the endangered species. The reserve is recognized for the largest number of tigers found per sq/km in comparison to its small size. This reserve also provide the shelter for the Blue Bull, Barking Deer, Hog Deer, Wild Boar, Leopard, Jackals, Langur, Rhesus Monkey as well as one lone Rhinoceros in the reserve. The attraction of the reserve is swamp deer.The marine and the terrestrial habitats of Shuklaphata Wildlife contain more than 665 plant variety belonging to 438 genera and 118 families, because of which Shuklaphata Wildlife Reserve is marked as the highest species richness area in terai.
